UMKHUMBANE SECONDARY GET’S NEW TEACHER-AT LAST
By: Khethukuthula Lembethe
Earlier this month Umkhumbane Secondary School hosted a dialogue session with students to unpack the issues at the school, mainly the issue of teachers asking for sexual favours from learners.
Among those present were Hope to Educate, representatives from Childline and Ubhaqa. Teachers were recently called out by learners for wanting to sleep with them and some learners admitted to having slept with the teachers.
Learners are adamant that teachers accused of sexual behavior with them should not return to the school.
“The relationship has been destroyed,” one learner said.
The boundaries have been broken between teacher and learner. The learners excuse their violence towards those teachers and say they were angry.
“We want our principal back”! That is one of the pleas from the learners.
Unfortunately the Department of Education yet since not re –appointed the school Mr Ngobese.
Learners are being threatened by teachers and they feel its due time they break the silence and speak out and they believe organization like GOLD Hope to Educate will help them get their voices heard.
The learners unanimously agreed that counseling is need for all learners of that school.
Child line is already counseling 7 children from the school concerning this case.
Student of Umkhumbane Secondary School want to be taken seriously by the KZN Department of education, “the learners need the KZN DoE to take their voices seriously as this is their rights” says Siyabonga Nzimande of Hope to Educate.
Three weeks after this dialogue, the Department of Education heard their cry and appointed two new teacher to replace some of the teachers that have been suspended.
Even though it is not enough as not all their requests have been met, Hope to Educate feels it is a step in the right direction.
