KwaZulu-Natal government has intervened in the Umlazi turf taxi war.
Department of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane has told IzikoDUT that the department has sent out a team of officials to the township to work with both the associations in a bid to resolve the matter.
The war started last week when cases of murder erupted believed to be in connection with the conflict between the MNR Taxi Association and the eNgonyameni Taxi Association. Police have confirmed two cases of murder.
Ncalane said the officials will work on the matter until the conflict ends.
“Meetings have been held with members of the two associations including leadership of South African National Taxi Council about possible resolutions for this matter,” says Ncalane.
He also mentioned that the MEC of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda promotes civil and constructive negotiations should any disputes in the taxi industry arise.
A follow-up meeting is set to happen this coming weekend to assess the progress following the last meeting with the officials.
“They will also discuss a way forward without the use of live ammunition,” says Ncalane.
