Verified Twitter accounts hacked in Bitcoin scam in the US
Major twitter accounts including official account of the USA former President Barack Obama got hacked in a bitcoin scam.
BBC News reported that tweets requesting a donation in the cryptocurrency had been tweeted from official accounts of Back Obama, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Kanye West, Joe Biden, a multimillion-dollar company Apple and many other verified major accounts including Twitter support account.
“Everyone is asking me to give back, and now is the time,” a tweet from Mr Gates’ account said. “You send $1,000, I send you back $2,000.” Is one of the tweets sent out from these accounts?
Other accounts had sent a tweet saying, “I am giving back to my community due to Covid-19 all Bitcoins sent to my address below will be sent back doubled. If you send back $2,000! Only doing this for the next 30 minutes! Enjoy.”.
According to BBC News the tweets were deleted a few minutes after they were posted, and they were also multiple reports that password reset requests were denied.
Twitter support based in San Francisco later tweeted that they are aware of the security incident impacting accounts on Twitter and they are investigating and taking steps to fix it.
Dmitri Alperovitch who is a co- founder of a cyber security company CrowedStrike said, “This appears to be the worst hack of a major social media platform yet.” Telling Reuters News Agency.
BBC News reported that according to a statement put out by San-Francisco’s FBI office the accounts appear to have been compromised to perpetuate cryptocurrency fraud. “We advise the public not to fall victim to this scam by sending cryptocurrency or money in relation to this incident.” It said.
