A life changing moment for 19 families of Trenance Park in Verulam happened as the eThekwini Municipality handed over title deeds as part of its Nelson Mandela celebration on Sunday.
“The previous government did not care about people owning houses, but this African National Congress is caring and sees the need of giving houses to its people,” said eThekwini Municipality Chief Whip, Stanley Xulu.
“In the Freedom Charter there are ten clauses and one says people shall have houses of which is what ANC government is implementing,” added Xulu.
He also said that the Municipality was aware of the number of people living in transit camps.
“We are here from Cornubia, where we gave houses to people who had lived years in transit camps without proper houses,” Xulu said.
Xulu further pleaded with those who had not yet received their houses to be patient as government resources were limited for all at once.
Almost over 20 years without a house on their name, the Singh family was the first to receive a tittle deed.
On behalf of her husband Karenda Singh said that they waited “for too long” to own a house.
Another receipient was the Naiker family.
“I want to thank the ANC for giving us this opportunity and giving my father this tittle deed,” Naiker said.
