VIDEO: ILLEGAL ABORTION CAUGHT

An illegal abortion-consultation has recently been caught on camera by undercover reporters of the Pietermaritzburg Weekend Witness.
According to News24, the reporters posed as a couple in need of a “safe, fast and painless abortion” – as advertised on street-poles and bins in towns across KwaZulu-Natal – and took the advice of a man offering abortion pills for R470.
The unknown man met the couple in a back alley where he insisted that the abortion pills, some of which had to be taken “right now”, were 100% safe.
In the footage, the man tells the couple that a range of tablets would have to be bought, and the female would have to ingest the tablets orally and by means of pushing the tablets inside her uterus, close to the placenta.
The Witness reported that the pills were referred to as Cytotec and after watching the video, senior nurse and private caregiver, Veronica Brynard, said that this pill is in fact real and extremely unsafe.
“The tablet will kill the foetus by causing internal bleeding, and the after-effects are horrendous because it will destroy the womb and you will never have children again.”
The man described the process of taking the pill as “very easy” and “not complicated”; he also ensured that by the evening “everything will be ok”.
Shanice Gounden (20) said, “It’s something I’d never do and I’m still shocked that people do it. I heard about stories where they do the abortion with a hanger. You should know that’s dangerous for your body. I hope that schools start teaching girls that this is a scam,” she
Health24 explains that lawfully, women now have access to safe and free abortion at government hospitals or clinics within three months of the pregnancy, and are warned against backyard abortions which run a risk of complications, infertility and even death.
