A 39-Year-old woman lost all her annual savings from her stokvel society to an ATM scam.
Sharon Magubane from KwaMakhutha joined a stokvel society group in 2010 when a friend introduced her to it.
Magubane was depositing money into her account via the ATM machine when a man who was dressed as a security guard approached her.
Magubane said that the man politely asked her to use another machine as the one she was using was out of service.
She added that she had just met with her team to split their savings of the whole year.
“The banks were closed and I had no option but to deposit at the ATM because there was no way I was going to sleep with the money in my house,” said Magubane in tears.
She said that when she used this machine the card also got stuck and did not come out.
The security advised her saying that this ATM is probably out of order as well and she needs to come back the next morning and go to the bank.
“I saw a trustworthy man and considering him a security I was convinced he was right, and I really saw the machine saying out-of-service,” she said.
The next day Magubane said she went to the bank and explained what had happened.
“I have never had a problem or had of incidents like this ever since I joined my stokvel society group,” said Magubane.
She said she went to the bank only to be told that the machines would not swallow her card unless there was a power failure.
Magubane realized she was robbed when an SMS went through her phone that an amount of R3 500 had been taken out of her account.
She added that the machine swallowed her card just after she had deposited R5 000 into the card.
“This is devastating, it has never happened before and we are assisting Magubane in all ways possible,” said Busi Mkhize a member and founder of the society group Siyazama Stokvel
SAPS Kwamakhutha’s Constable Vuyani Madlala said, “At this point there have been no arrests, we are still trying to investigate, we also urge Stokvel groups and everyone to not
withdraw or deposit outside the bank.”
