WOMEN IN MEDIA SEMINAR WARNS AGAINST CHALLENGES IN COMMUNITY MEDIA

The GenerationNext KZN youth group hosted a seminar for women in media at the US Consulate in Durban, Thursday.
The purpose of the seminar was to inform young women who are in the media industry of the challenges women face in community media.
One of the organizers of the event, Nonjabulo Ngcobo who graduated from the Durban University of Technology, is now part of the team of FM Legacy.
“When I even suggested the idea of the seminar there were a lot of questions and immediately I knew there was no trust,” Ngcobo commented.
An insight on the challenges faced by women in the media was shared by five guest speakers.
Sheila Mhlongo who is a publisher for the KZN community newspaper, Maud Blose DUT JournalismIziko founder and lecturer, Thembeka Zondo, a radio personality at Ukhozi FM,
Pamela Mkhize from Icon Media and Desiree Murugan who is a financial planner at the ABSA bank.
The speakers shared insight on their experiences and challenges as women that they faced in the media industry.
One of the challenges being confident because men always dominate the workplace.
According to Mhlongo, one of the greatest challenges women face is also ignorance.
“Young females expect that everything should be done for them and expect different treatment,” Mhlongo said during her address.
The students who attended the seminar had a lot to take in in terms of their careers as women going into the media field and to learn an ordeal of ‘the do’s and don’ts’ as future female
“I learnt more than I expected and I need to get rid of this habit of waiting for things to come to me, ” a media student from Creative Arts College added.
Ngcobo promised that this will be an annual event in order to assist women journalists through challenges they face and mentor one another.
