KwaMnyandu Shopping Centre securities are living in fear due to an increase in armed robberies of stores in the mall.
According to securities, the centre has been robbed six to eight times in the month of August alone.
Mbali Sibeko, who is the centre’s manager of securities, said that the increase of armed robberies is extremely worrying.
“We had 15 security guards and none of them had guns.
We believe that is why robbers come here often. They know our securities have no guns and that makes their job easier,” said Sibeko.
Sibeko said that the stores who get robbed often are food markets and jewellery stores.
Sthembiso Dlamini, who is a security guard at the centre, said that they live in constant fear and do not feel safe working at the centre anymore
“We always worried especially month end because that when most robberies occur.
We don’t feel safe doing this job, but that what our job entails,” said Dlamini.
Another security guard, Philani Mtolo, said that his family is forcing him to quit his job because they fear what might happen to him
“I will continue working at the centre because I need the money to support my family, even though they want me to quit but this is South Africa, there are no jobs just waiting around for
people,” said Mtolo.
Nomalanga Msibi, a mother of two who is a customer at the centre, said that she had from people in the neighbourhood that the centre was robbed
“This other time it happened a friend of mine was at the centre when the robbers came.
She was very disturbed over what she saw,” she said.
She also added that she really fears for her children because they always go to the centre on weekends.
