The Durban University of Technology hosted the World Of Work exhibition at the Fred Crookes Sports Centre on Thursday.
Representatives from various companies and organisations in the public and private sector gathered at the Centre to showcase their businesses.
The aim of the expo is to give students insight on what is expected from them in the workplace, and the various career opportunities in their fields of study.
Acting External Engagement Manager, CJay Paramanund, said that the Institution hosted the exhibition to create good relations with students and businesses.
“We are bringing the industry to the University and taking the University to the industry. This will help our students when they go into the industry for their Work Integrated Learning because of the relationships they have created with businesses present today,” said Paramanund.
Ayanda Zondi from SAPS Forensic Science Service, which was one of the many exhibitors, said it is crucial for students to be exposed to such so that they understand the careers they chose and what is expected of them.
He added, “It is impartial for industries from different sectors to display their expertise so that people can have an understanding of the working environment. This also helps students review their field of study and if they have made the right choice.”
Biomedical Technology student Sameena Mahomed said she found the expo informative.
“The expo was very helpful because it catered for various departments at the institution and it gave us detailed information about our careers and the job opportunities available in the market,” she said.
Paramanund concluded that he is happy with the attendance and believes that this will be of great help to the students.
“We hope that the students will absorb and put to practice the information they received today. We thank all the businesses and organisations that supported us,” he said.
