The Democracy Development Program (DDP) held a Youth Indaba at the Durban Botanic Gardens to celebrate youth who do extraordinary things.
Issues discussed included what motivates the youth to get out of bed and how they overcome their challenges.
Event Coordinator Sanele Mkhathini said, “By having this event, we want to change the mentality of people that the youth of today is lazy.”
Another Event Coordinator Linda Lazarczykova added, “Today is not about focusing (on) the negatives but to celebrate the positives.”
Performing arts, such as poetry and music, were given a platform.
Singer and self-taught guitarist Hloniphani Mthethwa said, “I was inspired that I should always do more. I am one of a few that is lucky and I should do more by passing it on.”
Nkanyiso Mkhize, who is part of a township development programme in Ntuzuma, said that the youth of 1976 took a stand against what they believed was wrong and the youth of today can also take a stand against drugs and crime.
