Zandile Gumede supporters demand her return
The proponents of suspended eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede gathered this morning to demand that she resumes her official duties.
This comes after the Mayors 30 day leave ended and she was expected to return to work yesterday but nothing was said or reported.
Gumede was suspended from her duties after her arrest last month with connection to money laundering, fraud and corruption charges. Gumede appeared at the Constitutional and Criminal Court on charges pertaining to a tender of R208 million. She was released on a R50 000 bail.
Councillor Nkosenhle Madlala says after Zandile appeared in court, the African National Congress (ANC) instructed her to take 30 days leave which expired yesterday.
“So today the expectation was that she is going to come back to office, however since there was no communication from the ANC office instructing her further, she decided that she should awaits such communication,” he said
Madlala confirmed that the Mayor has seen and heard reports from the media that the leadership has been communicating. Although there hasn’t been communication directed to her about whether to continue with leave or come back to work.
“She is at home and waiting for further instruction from the ANC Leadership,” said Madlala.
Nothing has been confirmed by the ANC leadership but it is expected that by the end of the week, the ANC leadership will release a media statement about the future of the eThekwini Mayor.
