Zandile Gumede’s fate remains unknown
The ANC’s Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) has announced that eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede’s special leave will be extended for a second time as a decision on her future has still not been made. Fawzia Peer will continue to be the acting Mayor of eThekwini until a verdict has been reached.
In a statement released by the ANC PEC, the leave of absence will be extended to allow more time for the affected parties and the organisation to make a final decision on the matter.
ANC KZN provincial secretary Mdumiseni Ntuli said that PEC will remain considerate to the movement and is committed to unraveling this debacle.
“When the matters are concluded, it must not be possible for anyone to say there was a travesty of justice, that certain comrades were not given an opportunity to give their submission or point of view,” he said.
According to Ntuli, the ANC is set to make a final decision at the end of this week.
Gumede was arrested and charged with corruption by the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court earlier this year. She is accused of using her political position as eThekwini mayor to influence a multi-million rand Durban Solid Waste tender.
Gumede is expected back in court on Thursday for her second appearance in court.
