KZN Education MEC on DOE fraud and corruption

Silindile Gumede
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Education Kwazi Mshengu, announced that he’s on a mission to remove all fraud and corruption within the Department of Education, on Thursday.
During his forensic report release, Mshengu revealed that the Director of Employee Relations was suspended. According to Mshengu, the director in question is facing and has to answer to allegations relating to the appointment of a particular teacher during the marking of Matric Exams.
“The teacher in question did not meet the requirements and therefore did not qualify. However, it is alleged that she was appointed after the intervention of the Director, who allegedly directed that the educator in question must be appointed because she is a girlfriend to the MEC,” he said.
Right after the Head of Department (HOD) and Deputy Director General (DDG) for Curriculum Management and Assessments were alerted, the teacher was immediately eliminated from the marking centre. Matric scripts marked by the teacher in question were re-marked by suitably qualified teachers.
Mshengu further stated that there will be no hesitation to take action against any form of corruption within the Sector.
“Fraud and corruption have no place in the Department of Education. Where there are allegations of fraud, corruption and any other malfeasance we are prepared and determined to act without fear, favour or prejudice,” said Mshengu.
