Matric pupils demand getting tested for Covid-19
Matric pupils of Nqabakazulu High School in KwaMashu, north of Durban are at loggerheads with the circuit manager after a teacher tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday.
The learners were told on Friday that one of their teacher had tested positive for the virus but the circuit manager never revealed the name of the teacher. The rage erupted when learners were demanding the name to revealed and police had to intervene.
The pupils locked the school gates, allegedly stopping an education department official from leaving and rubber bullets were used to disperse the crowd that boycotting in the school grounds.
The MEC for education in KZN, Kwazi Mshengu said in a statement that as the department they are shocked by what the learners did. Mshengu visited the school Wednesday and diffused the situation.
Learners also demanded to get tested together with their teachers as they are scared that they might take the virus back home and infect their families.
