BLACC HOLLYWOOD: ALBUM REVIEW

By Zamaswazi Mdhuli
Wiz Khalifa is not one to take risks and this is quite evident on his fifth studio album, Blacc Hollywood, which was released last month.
Snoop Dogg’s ‘nephew’ Wiz Khalifa, has gone regressed with this album. Khalifa’s lyrics are just lacking a bit of spunk. Khalifa sticks to his usual sound and his rapping skills fall short.
On a song called ‘Raw’, Khalifa raps this line: “home girl says that she wants to leave with her best friend, she gonna suck it to the onion. I’m gonna give it to them raw”. ‘Raw’ is a catchy song but the lyrics just don’t make sense. Khalifa is a new dad, so I hoped that his experience with fatherhood would influence his lyrics.
The album consists of 13 songs and only 7 of them are worth listening to. ‘Stayin out all night’ is one of the best songs on the album. It’s a song that one can listen to on those hot summers nights. Another great song is
‘True colours’ which features the first lady of Young Money, Nicki Minaj.
This song brings a lot of flavour to the album. I dislike that he featured Minaj on his album because it seems like all the artists who have released albums this year feature her. Featuring Minaj made it seem like he knew that his album was bad and he called Minaj to the rescue.
The language on this album is unsubtle to say the least. There’s a song called ‘Ass drop’ on the album and I would advise parents or big brothers and sisters not to play it when the little ones are around. This is the kind of song that will make you flinch while you’re listening to it. ‘Raw’ also has loose language. This is the kind of song that you will only play when you have your headphones on.
The first single from Blacc Hollywood is ‘We Dem Boyz.’ This song is slowly becoming an anthem. Khalifa doesn’t rap a lot on this song- he just repeats the title of the song throughout. The beats of the song make it bearable but I’m sure that Khalifa’s fans just love it.
2 songs stood out for me on this album- the first one is called ‘You and your friends.’ The song features Snoop Dogg and it is one of 2 songs on this album that will make you want to dance. It was a good move to feature Snoop on this song because the song would have gone unnoticed if he didn’t.
Another great song on this album is ‘K.K.’ The song features rappers Project Pat and Juicy J. This song will get anyone on the dance floor and Juicy J just (as rappers say) kills his verse on this song.
Blacc Hollywood is not Khalifa’s best album- he lacks creativity in his lyrics and it feels like he didn’t take time out to focus on it.
