BRICKNELL, A MAN WITH THE HEART TO SAVE
By: Nqobile Tembe
Within just a year as a member of the African National Congress, Nathaniell Bricknell has been appointed as the new chairperson of the ANC Youth League in ward 36, Durban North.
In his nomination, Bricknell was not contended by anyone which makes him believe that his fellow youth has faith in him as a leader. He said his main aim is to empower the youth with essential skills.
“One of my mandates I’m going to be focusing on during my term in office is skills development, education and I’m going to invite Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and government departments if possible to come through and start with skills development,” he said.
Bricknell said he will also focus on basic literacy training of people above the age of eighteen in order to correct the issues of the past. He believes that this will open opportunities for people. He is also planning on developing human rights as well in his area.
“I’m working with a few facilitators at the moment to start putting together youth conferences in the ward for various sectors. Given that it is a very diverse ward where we have from informal settlement to a highly developed suburban area, so the dynamics of the ward are very vast which can be slightly challenging,” he said.
He mentioned that he became passionate about politics at the age of twelve. Initially, he was a member of the Democratic Alliance but defected to the ANC last year after attending its few events and other various capacities.
“After seeing what work the party was doing, I realised that there was a horrible misconception about the ANC and particularly driven by the media unfortunately. I suppose regardless of who is in power the media will always do their own thing and journalists sometimes love to use their personal opinions to drive particular agendas, which is unfortunate because they mislead people,” he added.
He said that he has found his political home and he is not sorry for joining the party. To him, ANC is the only organisation that exercises democracy the most.“ANC is one of the most democratic parties I have ever experienced, because from branch level people have the final say. This is something I truly admire because all the policies and decisions are driven from the ground up and that for me is true democracy,” he said.
Bricknell will be working with Zandile Gumede (Dep. Chairperson), Don Shange (Secretary), Mlungisi Mbhele (Dep. Secretary) and Sizwe Mazibuko (Treasure). The additional members are Sbongiseni Lubanyana, Noxolo Dhlomo, Ncumisa Dlamini, Nonkululeko Mkhize, Wendy Zulu, Hombisa Madikizela, Ayanda Mkhwanazi and Gugu Madikane.
