DUT Securities – “Access Denied!”

Mandisa Magubane
The Durban University of Technology has increased security measures after the alleged stabbing that led to the death of a student last month.
All students are required to present their access cards to the security, failure to do so denies you access to the institution. Students have become divided on how they feel about the recent changes.
“I am not too sure how I feel about the changes but I guess if it is in the interests of the students then that’s a good thing. However this still does not guarantee the safety of the students.”
“This is what we wanted, we wanted tighter security and this is not even an inches of what we asked for. Anyone can take anyone’s student card. I will know they are taking the right precautions when they introduce the finger print system.”
“I understand why they are doing this but it seems a little too late since a student had to lose their life first before DUT security could see a problem within their security systems. This is a step in the right direction but this action plan still has many factors that haven’t been considered.”
“This security change was long overdue. It pleases me to see DUT making an effort to protect their students. Although this change came at busy time with students preparing for exams, anything can happen.”
