FESTIVAL ATMOSPHERE DRAWS DURBANITES TO THE RACING WORLD

The sound of car engines coming alive and the streets of Durban turned into a racing strip has been the ideal dream for every car enthusiast. It is safe to say that the streets of Durban will be turned into a scene from the Fast and the Furious as the Top Gear Festival returns to Durban soil for their third addition.
“In true Top Gear style one should always expect the unexpected. Without giving away too much it’s almost guaranteed that flames and explosives will feature in some way or another”
This was the promise of content manager Ken Watson for the 2013’s edition of the festival, and to their word they did deliver with top of the range stunts and driving techniques that can only be described as out of this world.
But the question remains, what effect car festivals such as the Top Gear Festival have on the youth of today to engage in the associated fast paced lifestyle?
“I can safely say that the Top Gear Festival influences the youth. It shows them how to drive fast and gives them the idea that it is okay to drift and drag race as long as it is done within certain boundaries. With everything from modified vehicles to ‘souped up drag racing cars, anyone who attends the event will want to drive fast after the show is finished. It gives them a sense of adrenaline that makes them feel it is okay to drive fast,” said Kameron Chetty.
Whereas Previn Vedan believes that the Top Gear Festival and other car shows/festivals cast a positive view on driving in general.
“It shows young people that a modified vehicle isn’t always necessary and the promoters of the event go to great lengths to express safety concerns. These types of competitions can be said to influence young people to modify their vehicles. However, they show them how modifications can be done safely and in the proper way,” said Vedan.
The city of Durban has experienced the influence that the Top Gear Festival has had for two years and the effect that it has had on the youth is definitely evident, whether its driving fast or modifying their vehicles the Top Gear
Festival and festivals similar to it have exposed the youth to a new world.
“The festival is incredible, the things that you see and experience are memories made for a life time. Do I believe that the festival influences the youth? Definitely but does it mean that it is a bad thing, not necessarily. It is up to the youth to decide what influences them and what doesn’t,” said Nabilah Hoosen.
