iPHONE 5C TO THE RESCUE
By: Qiniso Mbili
The iPhone 5C will be one of Apple’s much-anticipated devices this year. It will be released on the same date as the iPhone’s flagship, the iPhone 5S, on 20 September in the UK, US and China. Before the end of December it will be distributed to 100 more countries. With the same front interface and the traditional Apple home button, the 5C will be a bit different since it will be iPhone’s first “budget” phone, or so they say. It will cost only $99, about R990, but I would advise you to be prepared to cough up more the R3000 here in South Africa if you want it.
Apple is well known for being classy and elegant but it seems that they are now willing to give all that away in exchange for market sales. Apple will be, for the first time ever, targeting the middle end market with the 5C. This could be due to the company’s drop of market sales in the last three years. Under the hood there will be no major differences between the i5 and the i5C. Are they relying on it to put them back on the map? Can the low pricing of this device be the solution to Apple’s problems? Let’s see.
The Apple website states the following features:
The 5C is “unapologetically plastic and comes in 5 anything-but-shy colours. The front will be the traditional iPhone look with the back being a colourful plastic. The wallpaper colour will match the colour of the back respectively. The 5C will come in five playful colours, green, blue, yellow, pink and white. It will weigh 132 grams with a height of 124.4mm and will be quite thicker than its predecessor. The button layout will be the standard iPhone layout.
The 4-inch widescreen multitouch display will run a 1136×640 pixel resolution. Judging by these specs, the screen will be razor sharp and this will be a big bonus regarding the phone’s price. The screen will have a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating which will mean you won’t have to keep wiping off your fingerprints after use.
The iPhone will come with a new better performing chip called the A6, which will cause the 5C to perform 50% faster than the iPhone 5 and reduce battery usage. The 8MP iSight camera will also be better than the one of the iPhone 5 and it will have a 1.3MP FaceTime camera. The iSight is Apple’s new camera that has a bigger aperture, which will allow users to take better pictures of their dinner in the evening and upload to Instagram. With this phone you will have access to only 16GB and 32GB of internal memory, unlike the other Apple devices which offer a 64GB option.”
With everything said, the 5C is an okay phone for its price; it will be like buying an iPhone 5 in a plastic shell. In some aspects the 5C will be even better than the iPhone 5. After the 20th of September we will see if the 5C will be able to carry out its mission- reviving the Apple brand.
