Neill Blomkamp, South African film-maker and director of Oscar winning Distrit 9, has released another Science fiction revolutionary movie called Elysium. The thriller which was made in the U.S unlike his first movie, has much in common with it.
Written and directed by Blomkamp, the movie is set in the year 2154 where two classes of people exist- the extremely wealthy who live on Elysium and the poverty struck citizens who live on Earth. The latter, which is extremely overpopulated and full of crime and diseases is in need of the resources on Elysium. Max (Matt Damon), a citizen of Earth, in an effort to bring equality between Elysium and Earth takes on a mission to save the millions of lives lingering on Earth. Max’s initial mission was to obtain a cure for radiation poisoning for him and his girlfriend’s daughter. Blomkamp based Elysium on similar themes in District 9- one of the best science-fiction-horror flicks of recent years- like class, xenophobia and greed.
The movie shows life on earth as sad, and unmanageable with its extremely polluted towns and lack of food and basic needs resulting in those wealthier moving to live luxurious lives on a space station called Elysium leaving the poor on earth. This movie is a mix of love, compassion, action and science fiction and if one is paying attention, it is a depiction of a distant future, which is somewhat scary but believable.
The main character Max really gives an emotional performance. Blomkamp has really taken science fiction to a new level. Gone are the days of just aliens and war. This is definitely set to be an award-winning film. Elysium was released on 16 August 2013.
