MEN’S MONTH VS WOMEN’S MONTH

By: Nontsikelelo Ngubane & Bliss Ndapasowa
As July was Men’s Month and August is Women’s Month, we took it to the community of the Durban University of Technology to voice out what they think causes women to be given more attention on their month than men on theirs.
Could it be that men as a class are not symbolically annihilated in South African media?

Nombuso Magwenyana (24), a Quantity Surveying student said that media was not exactly quite about July being men’s month. She said the theme was mainly on motivating men to be better individuals especially on morning shows on radio. She contested the myth that men were being underrated. “Men are not underrated, the level of men has always been taken as higher so now that we are trying to balance out the odds, men feel underrated,” said Magwenyana.

Nombuso Sihlali (22) who studies Language Practice said that she was aware of men’s month, however she enjoys just how August groups all women together. More than creating equality with men, we are now creating unity that has never been heard of. She said that although men protect and lead us, women still nurture, love and bring peace all around.

Dumisani Ntshingila (23), who studies Food and Nutrition who did not know that July was men’s month said that women’s month is given the praise it deserves as women play a role that no man can ever play. “Every man reaches greater heights when he has a woman by his side,” he said. Ntshingila added that as much as a man may be able to do things on his own, one can do best with a great support system which will most likely be from a woman.

Yenziwe Ndlovu (21), a Language Practice student said that men’s month was not given much recognition because men alone do not give themselves enough recognition. She said that men do not pay attention to these things. As women, we recognise ourselves and the power we have and the impact we have on society. Ndlovu proclaimed, “If we don’t give ourselves the due credit, who will?” She said that men are important because of women.

Leon Mlinjana (26) from the Management Sciences department said although he knew that July was men’s month, he did not entertain it but because he was raised mainly by a woman and he finds the utmost peace, love and guidance from a woman. Mlinjana expressing his adoration for (imbokodo) said: “Women are important and deserve to be loved, they guide and sculpture our thoughts and being, they reach beyond a man’s eye can see.”

Sinethemba Ngwenya (22), a Management Sciences student said that men should get over it because July isn’t really for them. There is no specific public holiday for men. “At the beginning, men have always been given recognition, it is now time for the ladies to take the lime light,” he said, with excitement. Ngwenya said that women continue to fight for the nation and must be appreciated for that.

Exceed Mahiya (25) from Biotechnology said that he also was not aware of the fact that July was men’s month. He said that as much as women love attention, they are also vitally special. “Women are underrated; considering the amount of care because what they offer is beyond the credit given to them,” he said.

Riaad Nakooda (20) from Video Technology said he did not know about men’s month, however, he felt as if men have more than enough attention. Nakooda said that women are important because women make are the reason that people are. “Women are important because they create civilization, the youth is what it is mainly because of women, they make us sane,” he said. Nakooda added that men do not need more attention as long as they remain loved by women.
