Standing against social ills through sports
Durban University of Technology postgraduates Mpumelelo Shangase and Scott Dlamuka had an inspiration of global transformation through sports and recreation which led to the formation of their organization, Sport For A Cause (SFAC).
Seeking to address social ills and advocate for sports development these DUT students saw a need to start something that could help young people and get them off the streets.
Co-founder and co-ordinator of the programme, Mpumelelo Shangase who holds a National Diploma in Sports Management, hopes to groom real and responsible men through this initiative.
“We seek to advocate for social needs through sports and recreation, we notice that many of us are within the sports entity but only a few number of us seek to advocate for social ills through sports,” he said.
Shangase further said that a fair number of young people usually reach out to the entertainment industry hence they are creating an avenue where anyone can get a message through sports.
Late July, SFAC together with ‘Father A Nation’ (FAN) hosted a tournament called ‘No Excuse – 7Aside Soccer Tournament’ under the theme ‘Real Men Provide’ the tournament encouraged the young boys from around Durban to play soccer and stop gender based violence.
