WHAT’S UP WITH THE BLUE TICKS ON WHATSAPP MESSENGER?

By: Dale Munatswa
Two blue ticks appearing at the end of a text message on the popular massaging application Whatsapp, have caused serious waves on social networks such as twitter and Facebook over the past two days.
The new feature confirms that the message that one has sent, has been read, such as that used by Blackberry Messenger (BBM).
According to a post by the Whatsapp Support Team in the official FAQ on the Whatsapp website, the website, one grey tick means that the message has been successfully sent, two grey ticks mean that the message has been successfully delivered to the recipient’s phone. The two blue ticks confirm that the recipient of the the message has read it. In a group conversation, the blue tick will only appear when all the participants in the group read the sent message. In the case of a sent picture, video or audio, the ticks will appear when the recipient opens or plays the file.
The new development has cleared out the common misconception that two ticks indicate that the recipient of a message has read it.
Many Whatsapp users have expressed joy towards the new development and are keen for more developments to come.
Gift Nyamapfene said, “it is quite an interesting development and it has been a long time coming. Communication is a two way street and it is crucial, especially in a business environment for a sender to be aware if the receiver got their message. I hope Gmail and Yahoo are also following this development”.
However some users think that the new feature is going to be problematic.
Kudakwashe Musimbo said, ” It’s going to cause havoc among people, especially in relationships- partners will be tracking each other, and the fact that one has read your message and they’re not responding is going to be a problem.”
