YOU ARE WHO YOU SAY YOU ARE
By Nosipho Ntombela
Many times in life we allow people to define us; we allow them to give us names. We accept whoever we claim we are. How many times have we been taken for granted? For how long have we felt inferior and did nothing about it? Each and every day we meet different people who say different things about who they think we are. Some of the comments are good and some are so bad they break us in secret. Yes it true- we hide when we break. We do not want anyone to see our brokenness. We do not want them to see us weak, but is it really a sin to show we are human?
Why are we so embarrassed about who we are? We do not have to be. Sometimes we forget that who you are, is who you are. You cannot change it. You cannot shut out your own voice. The world admires a confident soul. This is earth; humans in it do not always tell you something that will build you. And if they do, they would not say it out loud. They will say to you, “Do not do it!” while what they mean is, “Go ahead, and nail it!”
It does not matter who you are, or how old you are. As long you know yourself, this is your world too. Your age should never define or control you. If you want to fly, then fly! Wings are not for eagles only- any bird canr have wings.
“I am who I am, my sexuality, the kind of cloths I wear and style. The things that are normal to me and not to other people. My culture makes me who i am. My choice and decisions”said Sabelo Mandonsela.
A 16 year old Lwandile from Richards Bay said, “I am a princess- so what? Nobody has a right to tell me I’m not one. Money does not define my status nor does it define my beauty. I may be broke as the bat, but I have to my full identity.”
What everyone thinks you are means nothing, as long as you know. We are the entire key to our lives. We are in charge of our lives. Let us not let anyone decrease our self-esteem. If you are a dreamer then your dreams should be big, big dreams. A wise man once said that if your dream does not shock you then you have not dreamt. Dreams do come true, but not until you dream.
