It’s that time of the year again where African talent in the entertainment industry is celebrated.
The MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) are back in Mzansi soil for the third consecutive time and will take place at the Ticketpro Dome, Johannesburg on Saturday, 22 October 2016.
The annual celebration of African and International talent and achievement MAMA recognizes and rewards musicians and achievers who have made the most impact on African music and youth over the previous year.
Senior Vice President and Managing Director at Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Africa, Alex Okosi said, “This year’s nominations are truly pan-African, coming from all corners of the continent, and honouring artists and achievers from more countries than ever before.”
Fresh from his recent collaboration with Drake, Wizkid is this year’s most nominated artist, with six nominations including two for Song of the Year, Artist of the Year, Best Male and Personality of the Year.
Future, Kwesta, Babes Wodumo, Emtee, Cassper Nyovest, Nasty C, Wizkid, Ycee, DJ Maphorisa, C4 Pedro, Sauti Sol, Yemi Alade, Diamond, amongst many others will be performing during the main event.
The ceremony will feature performances from African and international artists along with the show’s signature cross-genre and cross border collaborations.
Cassper Nyovest who is nominated for the Best Live Performance said that people are going to get the first real feel “Hollywood” as Johannesburg is like L.A and Durban is like Miami.
“It’s going to be epic, most South African artists are going to be at home so I think it’s going to be an epic night. The significance that MAMA is going to bring is networking, collaborations where African music gets to grow, we break boundaries and become one big country as Africa,” added Nyovest speaking to MTV Base.
A total number of 50 nominees including artists and achievers from 18 countries were revealed in 9 key music and lifestyle award categories by VIMN and MTV Base.
