AN AUTHOR WITH GOLDEN TALENT
By: Mhlengi Mafu
Dear Jacob is a radical between Jacob the grandson of Abraham from the bible and the honourable President of the Republic of South Africa Mr Jacob G. Zuma.
Here the author focuses on presenting the biblical Jacob as Jacob Zuma, human yet divine, dejected, rejected and despised, but chosen. In this letter the worst and the best moments of Jacob are prognostic to the life of Zuma.
The book was launched at the Durban Playhouse where it received a standing ovation from the audience. This book launch also featured food for thought as Durban’s growing poetry artist Ntokozo “Starring” Zulu took to the stage with his poems. One of the poems he performed was Ukubaluleka kwegama meaning the importance of a name.
Nkosi Mbatha gave a bit of history about the author. “Sabelo Soweto Mandlanzi was born in the mid 80’s in Cronation,” stated Mbatha. “He always had a burning desire. I remember at once where he called me and told me he lost his laptop and his book was there. He called me in the morning and told me he is half way writing it. This just showed the burning desire he has for writing.”
Many speakers spoke about the author including the author’s mother who was very proud of her son’s success and his accomplishments.
When Sabelo Soweto Madlanzi took to the stage, people were on their feet’s admiring the author’s talent. In awe by the audience’s reaction, Mandlanzi said, “from my first book Running Each Day, the reception has exceeded my growth as an author.”
One of the comparisons in the book Dear Jacob is that Jacob the grandson of Abraham is the 12th son in his family and President Jacob Zuma is the 12th president of the ANC. This is not a biography where you sit down and interview the person and thereafter write a book about them.
Mandlanzi is hopeful that Dear Jacob will be just as successful as his first book, which is still doing well on the shelves.
