Emerging local fashion designers will get a chance to showcase and sell their designs at a new Durban Fashion Fair (DFF) Emporium store.
The DFF Emporium is an eThekwini initiative whose goal and course is to give local designers an opportunity and also to take ‘fashion to the community’ said Sindi Shangase, DFF spokesperson.
“(I’m) looking forward to seeing an everyday person wearing my design which they will have bought from a store, this means our brands will not be worn only by people who know us or people that attend shows ” said designer, Vuyelwa Mgciyo of Scott Skotchi.
The store opened officially on Thursday at the Umlazi Mega City mall, the clothes on sale are ‘one-of-a-kind designer wear, described Sindi Shangase, eThekwini Business Support, Tourism and Markets Unit Programme Manager (BSTMU).
Shangase who has been heading the DFF for the past five years expressed how she feels Africa needs to be put on the map via clothing and textiles amongst other things.
“This is one of the City’s many efforts towards reviving the sector and driving job creation and economic growth. Africa needs to be put on the map with regard to supplying clothing and textiles,” she said.
The store will have works from ten different designers who showcased at the DFF and will also feature works of designers that are on the DFF mentorship programme.
Shangase expressed that the goal is to find designers who are serious about their brand and product and who are looking to grow.
“This is a six month pilot programme which will be assessed. And if it proves successful we will continue with similar programmes rolled out in other areas,” she added.
The inaugural opening had the likes of BSTMU deputy head, Thulani Nzama, Umlazi Mega City marketing manager, Thandeka Hlope and the Chairperson of Economic Development and Planning Committee, Cllr Sipho Kaunda who actually opened the doors to the store, among showcasing designers.
