The South African Idols (IdolsSA) hosted at the Playhouse on Saturday, turned out to be a unanimous event.
“There was a turn up of approximately 1 800 participants and there are more people coming in to audition,” said Ahmund Martin, MNet special projects coordinator.
The crowd showcased many different genres of music during the auditions. The atmosphere was vibrant and refreshing as the crowd sang in harmony and danced to many different African songs. “This is what Ubuntu is about,” said contestant Senzo Gumede. The cheering of the crowd escalated when they were addressed by the IdolsSA presenter, Tebogo Thekisho better known as ProVerb. The crowd then proceeded to register and audition for the prelim auditions. Some contestants were easily given a yes. Contestant Reilly Wade was given a yes after auditioning for the eighth time.
Other contestants were not so fortunate like 21-year-old Nontando Mpule who broke down into tears after her unsuccessful audition. Nontando left her 11 month old baby in Pietermaritzburg with her stepmother and camped outside the auditions venue the night before. “I had promised my sister that I would return home with a golden ticket,” said a very distraught Nontando.
The second round of auditions, the director’s cut, will take place on Wednesday.
