DUT BEAUTY PEGAENT CONDEMNS XENOPHOBIA

“Africa for all” was the theme when models took to the ramp for a chance to be crowned king and queen of the Durban University of Technology (DUT) last Friday.
The annual Mr and Miss DUT, which is organised by the Student Representative Council (SRC), didn’t only give students a stepping stone to the modelling work, but it served as a
call and campaign for unity among Africans following the xenophobic attacks South Africa experienced recently.
The 24 contestants from various DUT campuses that participated came out dressed in colours of different countries around Africa.
Each contestant chose an African country to represent, the flag of the country of choice accompanied their contestant number throughout the pageant.
Senzi Myeza, SRC treasury and main organiser of the event, said that they started planning the event just after the incident of xenophobic, so they worked on the idea that will raise
“We started planning in April and at that time xenophobic attacks were an issue in our country.
We decided to make it more of a campaign to stop this from happening, we don’t condone it. Africa is for all,” Myeza said.
Lisanne Lazarus, newly crowned Miss DUT 2015 and journalism student said that she was happy to be part of such an important campaign.
“It is such an honour to be part of such an event, I strongly feel that South Africa is everyone in it and us as the youth should denounce xenophobia,” Lazarus stated.
Malinda Cebekhulu, who was in the crowd cheering, said that she learnt a lot.
“I did not know there was a theme but I thought the flag idea was very good,” said Cebekhulu.

2015 and Wandile Mbatha as Mr DUT 2015.
