A flock of dancers, photographers, rappers, comedians and social media celebrities gathered at the Playhouse Theatre yesterday to attend the first annual Durban Creative Awards.
The Awards recognise artists working in and around Durban, and aim to raise awareness of the creative industry in the city. The award ceremony was an attempt to curb the belief that in order to be recognised, successful and celebrated, artists from Durban must move to Johannesburg or Cape Town.
In addition to the selection of nominees, the event was attended by a number of well known Durban locals including Venessa Marawa, radio presenter and model; Singer Kyle Deutsch; Street dancer, Verb; radio presenter and comedian, Neil Green and one half of Distruction Boyz.
The winners were selected from 62 nominations, drawn from 19 categories including two honorary gongs given to individuals ‘making a special impact in Durban’. Many of the selected winners were young and upcoming producers, make-up artists, and content creators who believe they can shine a light on the Durban art scene.
Organiser and co-host of the event, Arnold Phillips popularly known as Aewon Wolf, said that the ceremony was ‘a big success’ despite all the technical mishaps and no-shows.
“We overcame every difficulty that came our way considering that I had zero budget given to me, this is all out of my pocket. It took a lot,” he said.
Sinothile Mzimela who owns Beauty Trends, a make-up company, was one of the winners. The local make-up artist said that the win means that people are ‘recognising the amount of hard work and dedication’ she puts into her art.
“This award means that there are people out there who recognise the amount of hard work I put into my business and gives reassurance that I’m heading in the right direction. With this award I have also broadened my audience and clientele,” she said.
