HOSPICE LENDS A HELPING HAND

By: Marcelle Naidoo
The Chatsworth Hospice successfully ran its 12th Annual Charity Fete from the 30th – 31st of August.
The non-governmental organisation which is located in Silverglen, Chatsworth, hosts events such as the Fete regularly to assist with their daily expenses. The Chatsworth Hospice serves as a home for the elderly and disabled. All volunteers care for patients out of the goodness of their hearts and do not receive an income from the organisation.
Over the years, the hospice has grown and thanks to the many sponsors, patients are receiving high quality care. However, since the organisation does not receive funds from the government, they have had to come up with ways to raise the money that is needed. Other events like fun runs, wellness days, dinner & dance evenings and spa days play an important role in the running of the hospice.
Bani Hurbans, patient care co-ordinator at the hospice, has worked with the organisation for over 23 years. She is a retired nurse who has dedicated her time to helping those in need. “The people who volunteer are usually retired or housewives, we would love to see more young people who are willing to help,” said Hurbans. The event included an array of activities such as a tea garden, stalls, a health desk and beauty treatments which included manicures, massages and facial care. All of these services were done by volunteers at the hospice.
The hospice is grateful to members of the community who sponsored goods and contributed in any way, making this year’s Fete yet another successful fundraiser.
