Exhibitors took the opportunity to astound people with their new products at this year’s Taste of Durban Festival at Sun Coast on Saturday.
Hundreds of people flocked in to taste different foods, wines and drinks on exhibition for the first time in Durban.
According to the festival director Justine Drake, Taste of Durban is an annual event sponsored by Pick n Pay. Its basic idea is to showcase the ‘tastes of the city.” A wide range of restaurants which represent the taste of the city are invited to exhibit products that best define it.
The festival has grown bigger since its introduction in 2012. Drake said that nearly 3000 people came for the opening night on Friday and even more people came on Saturday.
Beer enthusiasts were treated to a new pear cider, imported from Sweden by Rekorderlig Premium Cider Company. According to the events manager of Rekorderlig Gary Power, the cider is a fusion of many fruits, but pear based, instead of the traditional apple based ciders. Power said that people who tried it at the Taste of Durban were the first to try the revolutionary cider in South Africa.
The event attracted local and international food lovers. Clementino Jose came from Mozambique to experience the Taste of Durban, and he was astonished by the nature of the event.
“It has been good; it is my first time to see things like this. I have never seen anything like this before, like a show for food,” said Jose.
New businesses such as Kupcake Heaven have been constantly growing through the Taste of Durban. Rowena Naidoo, owner of the company said that the festival has provided an effective platform for them to get their business out there, to market themselves and their products.
“It really took my business to the next level last year, so I think it is going to do even better this year,” said Naidoo.
The atmosphere around the venue of the festival was characterised by different aromas of chocolate, beer and meat. Visitors had an opportunity to sip and taste samples of food and wines on showcase.
