KZN honours young talent!
The stars were shining at the 9th annual KwaZulu-Natal Young Achievers Awards, on Saturday night at the Durban International Convention Centre.
The awards were hosted by the Rural Youth Development Foundation – SA, with the aim of celebrating, acknowledging and promoting youth transformation across the province.
These prestigious awards are made up of different categories such as; Beauty, Community Development, Health, Entrepreneurship, Visual Arts, Dance/Music, Fashion and Journalism.
Mthobisi Mkhize, who is the founder and director of the Rural Youth Development Foundation, said that it is important to acknowledge those who work effortlessly in making a difference in KZN.
“As the foundation, we aim to celebrate our KZN born leaders, honour them for their excellent role in inspiring the youth of KZN. These awards are growing and I can’t believe that we are on the 9th season now,” said Mkhize.
DUT alumni, Cayle Sanelisiwe Mboto, who walked away with an academic award for best Teaching, Learning & Research, said that she is very happy to be honoured for the work she has done.
“Last year I graduated with 21 distinctions in Public Relations, and I have been tutoring Communication Science & Business Law to share my knowledge with other people. Recently, I have been a victim of cyber-bullying due to being unemployed while having such good results,” said Mboto
DUT Journalism student, Mduduzi ‘Dawud’ Phungula, who snatched Best Social Media Initiative award, after winning the Best Youth Radio Initiator award in 2017, said that he is excited to be honoured at home.
“As someone that is passionate about the entertainment, it makes happy to see that that KZN cares about our craft. This is the second time winning at the KZN YAA and it shows that my work doesn’t go unnoticed,” said Phungula.
The ceremony ended on a high gear by honouring KZN born celebrities who have made a names for themselves in the entertainment industry. Some of this year’s honorary recipients were; Nonhlanhla “Mroza” Buthelezi (Ukhozi FM), Lungelo Gumede, Thembi Mtshali-Jones (Imbewu), Mondli Ngcobo, Jailoshini Naidoo and many more.
