The main question on one’s mind now should be… what did you do for your 67 minutes on Mandela day? If you were unable to contribute or had work commitment, don’t worry! Everyone deserves a second chance and here’s yours.
The Chatsworth Scout Group is embarking on a Mandela Day drive to honor the father of our nation. The drive is to help make a difference and be a part of the initiative in a different way. The Scouts will be running their individual collections throughout the month approaching friends, family and community members to get involved.
A public collection will be taking place on the 20th and 27th of July 2013 at The Ridge shopping centre in Shallcross. The aim is to collect a thousand canned foods and non perishable items to distribute to the disadvantaged in and around the Chatsworth area.
Previn Vedan coordinator and troop leader of the Chatsworth Scout Group said, “The Scouts hold an annual egg drive during the Easter period, which started in the 90’s. During this drive they collect (real) eggs for distribution to the unprivileged. We have adapted this project and decided to hold a Can and non perishable collection since these items have a longer storage life.”
When asked about sponsors being brought in to help aid the scouts in their quest to help the underprivileged, Vedan said, “Since this is the first collection of this kind, we have not approached companies for sponsorship. But rather we are relying on the generosity of individuals. If the project proves to be a success, which I’m sure that it will we will expand the project next year and get other scout groups from both Durban and other provinces to get involved and run the “Together we CAN” project.”
“Our prime purpose in this life is to help others and if you cannot help them at least don’t hurt them” – Nelson Mandela
The initiative is to help the community expand and uphold the values that Nelson Mandela instilled in our country. Contribute to humanity by helping the Chatsworth scouts and donate items to help the disadvantage and help spread the word.
