MEET THE NEWCOMERS

By: Chanelle Lutchman
We here at JournalismIziko (JI) are all about new talent. We heard about an upcoming band performing at Jack Rabbits and decided to catch up with the Hyde and the Resistance band.
JI: How long or when did you guys form the band?
HnR: About six months now, around mid-year 2012. We have known one another for a while now. We reside in the same area and when we realized we shared the same passion for music, we decided why not do something about our talent instead of hiding it away from others.
JI: Do any of you have any other “band experience”?
HnR: Preston, the vocalist has had past experience. “I was in a band called Seth previously we were quiet recongised, however after a while we decided to disband. It’s been two years now, but I’m back doing my thing, with this crazy crew (Hyde and the Resistance),” said Preston.
JI: Tell me about the name of the band, how did it come about?
HnR: Well we all are from the same faith (Christianity), we actually all connect like a story from the story in the bible “The strangest case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”. Where Jekyll is a scientist that creates a potion that removes his evil side which is Hyde, and the resistance is a group. From the movie “Terminator”, we basically put the both together and figured it was the only name we as a group took a liking to and agreed on.
JI: Something tells me there’s a deeper meaning behind this
HnR: Everything has a deeper meaning. It is in a way what we chose, the decisions in life and the paths we take. There’s always good and bad, the bad/evil within us is represented by Hyde and the Resistance is our Christian conscious. It is kind of a paradox, because it is the constant battle between good versus evil but obviously the resistance always prevails. So in conclusion it is good versus evil in a nutshell.
JI:Tell me about your music
HnR: We have compiled six songs at the moment. We like to keep our music fresh, and fuse it make it something new. Our aim is to immediately grab the attention of our audience and not lose it.
JI: What inspires your music/lyrics?
HnR: Our music is mainly inspired by God, life and our experiences in life that have made us who we are today. Our lyrics represent a lot of emotion and thoughts that one has.
Even though we are a band, people would assume we would only play a certain type of music. However, we actually like to experiment with various types of genres and fuse that into our music making it fun, vibrant and enjoyable to the ear.
JI: How has feedback from audience been?
HnR: From our perspective on stage looking down at the audience while playing we notice a lot of smiles, some trying to sing along even those sitting would be tapping their feet and drumming their fingers.
From our crowd’s positive energy we are able to play better. Our music is to inspire people. Our lyrics to show others that we are human as well and have gone through an experience that they (audience) are probably going through at the moment.
JI: Any last words for those reading this article and/or interested in listening to hyde and the resistance?
HnR: We are a fresh band and have only played two gigs so far and have gotten positive feedback from our audience. We were just told that we were allowed to go through to the next round here at Jack rabbits and are given the opportunity to play this Saturday. As a band we wish to reach greater heights, we all want to make it big and get our name out there. We can only achieve this by taking one baby step at a time. So KZN give us a chance, if you are looking for music that is going to get your feet tapping and which is going to inspire you that’s different from the rest then we as a band promise we won’t lead you stray.
