Young and talented jazz musicians entertained their fans at the Sunday Jazz Sundowners at the BAT Centre in Durban.
Music students from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and Durban Music School shared a stage while showcasing their talents and passion through jazz music, with their lecturer and mentor who is just as passionate about music.
“I am a piano player but I specialise also in education teaching and learning which is my passion to develop young lions,” said Sibusiso Mashiolane, music lecturer at UKZN and Durban Music School. “This is such a special day for me because what happens is I get to showcase the talent live with different audience and not to people they know or colleagues.”
Mashiolane added that he showcases these young people’s talents to the community in order for the community to see what their kids are capable of doing and how much passion they do have for music.
Newly formed band of four, ‘Iza Ngoma Tribe’ consisting of Sbusiso Shabalala, Charles Mdakane, Nkululeko Ndlovu and Phuti Mofokeng, is just as passionate about their music as well as their fans.
“We are more cognisant about what the music does to the people, so what we try to do is amplify the good feeling energy with whatever we try to do,” said Shabalala, piano player and vocalist.
Some of the Durban Music School Jazz Band members, Nokwanda Mthembu, Mndeni Mvubu and Thabo Sikhakhane could not hold back to talk about their music journey, their mentor and future endeavours.
“We feel that we can achieve our future goals through playing with this band and by the likes of Mr Mashiloane assisting us and as a group supporting each other,” said Sikhakhane, trumpet player.
Sikhakhane added that his goal is to be one of the best trumpet players in South Africa and Mthembu said she envisions herself playing in all stages.
Blvck Crystals members, Jaedon Daniel, Nhlakanipho Shabalala and Seth were among the other bands that left fans asking for more.
