No major events in KZN this festive season!
There will be no major events during festive season in South Africa’s favourite holiday destinations, Durban. This was confirmed by the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government.
The Provincial Executive Council of KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday chaired by the Premier, Sihle Zikalala held its last ordinary meeting for the calendar year 2020. Among the issues discussed upon in the meeting, the council considered various request from event organisers in relation to hosting big events that are associated with festive season.
In a statement they said they have been reliably advised by medical and scientific practitioners not to hold big events in the province.
“The Executive Council on advice by medical and scientific practitioners resolved not to encourage the hosting of major events in the province owing to the threat and risks imposed by Covid-19 pandemic.” Read statement.
Currently KZN accounts for 18 % of the country’s active covid-19 infection only third to Western and Eastern Cape, with, the council noted with great worry the evidence of the Covid-19 second wave. “There is evidence of the second wave which has becoming real in other provinces. KZN is edging closer towards the Covid-19 second wave cliff, according to the latest figures.
With the decision by the council expected to have a hammer blow to event organisers and artists, they cited that the lives of the people is of paramount “The government understand the social and economic impact of not hosting major events at popular locations in the province during the festive season, however, it is the view of the government that lives of our citizens and matter and need to be protected.” Read statement.
Zikalala commenting on Enca about beach goers, he said there would be strict measures for them “With regards to the beach it would be impossible to stop the people from going to the beach, but we would want people who go to the beach to take these Covid-19 regulations seriously, we implore on our people to co-operate to ensure that they stay safe.” Said Zikalala
The Council still encouraged people to visit and adventure during the festive season given they are Covid-19 free “People are encouraged to visit and enjoy the province of KwaZulu-Natal.” Read statement. Among some major events that could be affected are: Umlazi Jazz Festival, Umlazi 13 December, Last Dance Ballito 31st December.
