Omelettes and savoury dishes were on the menu on Saturday when chef Asha Maharaj hosted a cooking class Ridge Shopping Mall in Chatsworth.
The self-taught chef – who is a regular columnist for the Sunday Times newspaper – cooked up a storm and allowed shoppers to taste her food.
Maharaj has been sharing her recipes in print for 14 years, and regular slot on Radio Hindvani, a local community station. Although her expertise lies in Indian cuisine, she enjoys experimenting with various ingredients to manufacture an assortment of flavours and smells, making her dishes unique.
“Not only do I try recipes from other people, but I take these recipes and add more twists and a different flavour to it,” she said.
Julie Soorajpal, organiser of the event, said: “It was a success. Many people are able to taste new flavours and use the tips that they have learnt to incorporate it with their everyday cooking.”
Maharaj’s inspiration to become a professional chef was her family, who supported her through what she describes as the shear joy of cooking. Maharaj is busy with her fifth cook book.
Besides cooking, she enjoys travelling and visiting new places.
Shivaan Naidoo a resident of Chatsworth who attended the event said: “It was an enjoyable event and it was simple to watch and follow.”
Maharaj hosts cooking demonstrations on a monthly basis at the Ridge Shopping Mall.
