The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) annual beauty pageant transcended all expectations on Friday.
The theme for the Mr and Miss DUT was ‘Identity’ and it was truly a personification of all contestants and everyone around them. The standard of this year’s competition was high and contestants were in it to win it. The key to be crowned victory was not simply to walk down the runway, but it was key that contestants were able to provide sound response to somewhat rigorous judge’s questions.
Third year Information Technology Software Development student, Zandile Langa is a perfect epitome of beauty with brains as she took home the title of 2017 Miss DUT.
“I am so excited and I wasn’t expecting it. I feel it was everyone’s game cause all contestants were equally capable of being the next Miss DUT,” said Langa.
The judge’s had a tough job while deliberating the winners. However, with a formidable panel of judges everything seemed easier in the end.
Amongst the panel of judges was radio personality Jacinta Ngobese, uKhozi FM’s fashion expert Mthokozisi “Swenka” Chiya and Durban’s very own male supermodel Sushi.
“In life you always have people that tell you that you can’t do it. Not only did I enter to prove them wrong but I entered because I believe in myself and I want to be an example to other people,” added Langa.
Second year Homeopathy student, Sanele Memela is truly a force to be reckoned with and this was evident when he was crowned the 2017 Mr DUT.
“Firstly it was surprising and overwhelming, I am very happy at this moment,” said Memela.
When asked about his future endeavours and bringing about change to the university, Memela was very clear with his mission.
“For me it’s not about changing DUT, it is about putting DUT to another level. So I will do more good that DUT has been doing and I’d make sure that the pass rate really increases at DUT,” stated Memela. “I want to be an inspiration. I want to be the person they look up to and as much as they screaming for me, I want to make that work in my favour,” concluded Langa.
Male contestants were dazzling on one of Platinum group’s, Hilton Weiner suits and female contestants were dressed by the well-known Durban fashion designer Sandile “Alfalfa” Mbambo. He has showcased in the Durban Fashion Fair and he also dresses celebrities.
