Young women filled the Playhouse Company on Sunday as the Miss Durban Tertiary Institutions auditions went underway.
Isidore Productions, which organises events and beauty pageants, held auditions in search of not just the most beautiful but also an intelligent woman in a tertiary level around Durban.
Muzi Hlengwa, who is the brain behind this competition, said they had some troubles last year that resulted to the competition being put on hold.
“The competition that was started in 2012 is taking place for the second time after having some setbacks in 2013 that resulted to it not taking place but this year its back and better,” Hlengwa said.
He further explained that this pageant is an educational programme, because even the prizes differ from the norms of all the other beauty pageants. The prizes promote educational excellence; they don’t offer cars as grand prizes. But they offer bursaries, laptops and driver’s licence training that would help a tertiary student to prosper in life.
Yolanda Mngadi, who was crowned Miss Durban Tertiary Institutions said many doors opened for her after winning the competition.
“The prizes I received helped me a lot with my studies, I even got the opportunity to rub shoulders with the famous after I was given a ticket to the Metro FM awards which meant a lot to me” Mngadi explained.
Brand manager and Choreographer, Jade Kunene, said they are looking for someone who has confidence.
“Beauty is the last thing, we want an educated face. A model has to be intelligent and behave like a woman with class, confidence is what we want to see,” Kunene said.
Slindile Ngobese said she is crossing fingers, hoping that she makes it through to the finals after she said she gave it all at the auditions.
“After competing in a number of competitions back home I have managed to conquer challenges you face when you take to the ramp. I gave it all today,” Ngobese said.
The competition finals are set to take place on the 13 September 2014 and the venue is yet to be confirmed.
