The second largest radio station in world, Ukhozi FM, celebrated its 53rd birthday at the packed Royal Show Grounds in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday.
It is an annual birthday celebration as it always hosts music festivals at the same venue. The Kwa-Zulu Natal based station was founded in 1960 and was called Radio Bantu then. It thereafter changed its name to Radio Zulu in 1977 and changed it again to Ukhozi FM. The station grew from strength to strength and it now stands on 7.3 million listeners.
Leading up to the event, presenters were already broadcasting on the venue and the surrounding areas of Pietermaritzburg. Listeners did not disappoint, as they attended in numbers to celebrate with the award-winning station.
“It was not only a celebration, but also to meet and thank listeners for giving the station six awards in the MTN Radio Awards earlier this year,” the station website reported. During the event, the station also gave-away a brand new white Polo Vivo.
A number of artists and deejays including the likes of Sifiso Ncwane, The Soil, Dr Malinga, Dj Tira and others kept the crowd entertained.
Crowds waited patiently for Dr Malinga who did not disappoint as he’s known for his energetic performances.
The event concluded on a positive note as attendees were dancing and posing with their favourite celebrities. It was clear that those who attended enjoyed themselves and they called in the next day, saying they can’t wait for the next birthday celebration.
According to social feeds, the event was a raging success and many are waiting to attend next year’s event.
