YOUNG DUT DESIGNERS SAIL THROUGH TO THE FINALS

Designers from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) dominated the last ten designers
to go through to the Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award Fashion Experience.
The event that took place at the Greyville Racecourse on Friday night saw 25 from more than
100 contestants from around KZN battling it out for the top 10 that would showcase their
designs at the semi-finals.
Sindi Shangase, programmes manager of eThekwini Municipality, said that as part of the
judging panel they had a difficult time choosing the last 10 semi-finalists since all the
designers showed amazing talent and skill.
“The factors we looked at were translation of the theme which was the Captains Table, as
well as originality of the design,” said Shangase.
Six out of ten semi-finalists hailed from DUT and the others came from the School of
Fashion in Pietermaritzburg, Inscape Education Group and Steenkamp School of Fashion in
The excited Alexander James Cox from DUT who made it to the semi-finals, exclusively told
Iziko Lifestyle that, “as a designer you must never doubt yourself”.
“I never thought that I could make it this far. I thought that top 25 was cool but now I am in
the top ten, it’s unbelievable,” said Cox.
Athenkosi Mthetheli Mfungula was appreciative of all those who supported her.
“I want to thank my husband and family for the support they have given me to be able to
have time to do this. I also want to thank my model she showcased my dress perfectly just the
way I wanted and that puts a smile on my face,” said Mfungula.
Overwhelmed with emotions Kimosha Ganas, also one of six DUT semi-finalists, said that
being a young upcoming designer is a lot of hard work but with passion and drive it can be
the most rewarding.
“I am so blessed and amazed to have made it this far, it’s been a lot of hard work with lots of
perseverance,” said Ganas.
The semi- finalists are Alexander James Cox(DUT),Brunhilda Yobo Fomunyuy(School of
Fashion Pietermaritzburg), Clara Vach (Inscape Education Group), Carla Ann Gerstmeier
(DUT), Athenkosi Mthetheli Mfungla (School of fashion Pietermaritzburg), Geina Mongezi
(DUT), Kimosha Ganas (DUT), Martin John (Steenkamp School of fashion
Pietermaritzburg), Simphiwe Luthando Ximba(DUT) and Tracy Sunshine Mwlase(DUT).
