YOUTH TAKING INITIATIVE
By: Mbali Shange
A team of extraordinary kids from all over the country came together in the city of Durban to do two things- study at the Durban University of Technology and make their dreams a reality.
One of those dreams is showing the people of KwaZulu-Natal their talent. Not only does this group have a really catchy name- Afreecan Concepts, they are also a multi-talented group. Their talents and expertise range from photographers, graphic designers, models, interior designers, stylists, poets, the works- to bring Durban and hopefully the rest of the country some originality and outside the box ideas.
Afreecan Concepts name was taken from the groups’ belief in South Africa after 20 years of Democracy. Zuko Ghu who is one of the founders of the group explained with pride why they have named their movement, Afreecan
Concepts, saying, “When you’re a free man like you are as a black educated person in South Africa after apartheid, you feel like there is an opportunity for you to shine and walk around as a free man and do great, great things.
The aim is not only to better yourself but to better the rest of the country too- starting with the youth, as we are the leaders of tomorrow.”
These ambitious kids add a lot of African flavor to the whole “entertainment and arts” generation, using African flags and patterns on their clothes and designs, promoting South African contemporary art and music and many other things that the youth of South Africa is proud to share.
They have an African Concepts Facebook page, where they share pictures and their beautiful artistic work for anyone who wants to be inspired or wants to know more about what they do as a collective.
To push their name and expand their creative, they use the resources they have around them at school, or amongst friends. This team of incredible artists is still looking into expanding their work by adding on other different kinds of artists, whether it may be jewelry designers, graphic designers or journalists.
Afreecan Concepts has many plans for their future-most importantly, leaving a legacy. They are a revolution- a movement. A force to be reckoned with and their star is going to rise and shine brighter.
