The KwaDukuza Municipality has hailed the success of the Ballito Pro surfing event held at Willard Beach, Salt Rock.
The event, which is held annually in the first week of July, is also the longest running professional surfing event and celebrated its 47th anniversary this year.
The event saw tens of thousands of locals and holidaymakers enjoying a week at the beach with music and extreme sports entertainment.
KwaDukuza Municipality’s Raymond Ngobese congratulated the 2015 champion Brazilian surfer, Alejo Muniz.
“Although we would have liked to have a local surfer win the event, but even so Alejo Muniz is also deserving of the accolade and (as) KwaDukuza we have shown that we have the capacity to host a world class event,” said Ngobese.
Muniz took the title in a 40 minute thrilling final against Davey Cathels (24) of Australia and beat out 95 other surfers from around the world.
The Municipality also revealed that the Ballito Pro was a huge success.
The event was sponsored by Billabong, who took over from long time sponsors Mr Price and was supported by KwaDukuza Municipality and 5fm.
