Dignitaries, coaches and invited guests gathered at the Moses Mabhida Stadium to launch the 2017/2018 Absa Premiership season last night.
The 2017/2018 season will see a huge interest in rivalries or otherwise known as derby games, with ABSA saying that they will host a dinner on the Thursday night prior to a weekend derby game starting this weekend with the Tshwane Derby as Supersport take on Sundowns.
Representatives from the three KwaZulu-Natal teams were in attendance. AmaZulu newly appointed Coach Cavin Johnson, Golden Arrows veteran defender Musa Junior Bilankulu and Farouk Kadodia were also in attendance alongside officials from ABSA.
Coach Johnson who was appointed just over a week ago, said that he is proud of the work the technical team has done in keeping the players going but insisted they have a lot to do in the upcoming days to play against Free-State Stars.
“I need to congratulate the AmaZulu background team for maintaining the players. We all have a major task ahead of us. We have this week to prepare and we need to ensure that we are as ready as possible,” said Johnson.
Johnson made sure that the result is not the most important aspect in the first game of the season.
“For us to go out and play a good game of football is the most important thing,” explained Johnson.
Bikankulu of Golden Arrows has high hopes for his team this season and insists that home games will be vital.
“Everyone is beatable in this PSL we just need to take each game at a time, and the most important thing is to win our home games,” said Bikankulu.
ABSA has created an initiative for supporters in the new season that will see one particular fan walk away with 1 million rand and all you have to do is be present at a PSL match to stand a chance to win.
The 2017/2018 season will kick off on Friday as reigning champions Bidvest Wits take on Cape Town City at the Bidvest Stadium.
