Amazulu won the inaugural uThungulu Mayoral Cup as they beat Mamelodi Sundowns 5-4 on penalties after a one-all draw in Richards Bay on Saturday.
The former Premier Soccer League team eased into the final after thumping Melford FC 2-0 in the first game of the day. Sundowns on the other hand, humiliated home
boys Thanda Royal Zulu by a whooping 4-0.
These wins meant the two sides representing Pretoria and Durban respectively, were going to lock horns in what was deemed to be a fascinating final.
Steve Barker’s side broke the deadlock 30 minutes into the game with a strike from Zambian talisman, Bornwell Mwape.
The Brazilians managed to level matters in the dying stages of the second half courtesy of a strike from South African U19 international, Keletso Makgalwa. This
equalizer sent the game straight to a penalty shootout.
Usuthu were composed enough with Tapelo Nyongo, Mwape, Tshepo liphoko, Zungu and Sifiso Hlanti managing to get the ball past goalkeeper, while Magwaqana missed.
Motjeka Madisha, Suprise Moriri, Teko Modise and Samuel Julies scored for Downs, with Hlompho Kekana and Lebohang Mokoena failing to convert for the Chloorkop
Speaking after the victory, Usuthu coach Steve Barker said, “The boys gave it all on the field, they managed to score after 30 minutes they showed improvement, I am
very proud and excited about the result.”
