AmaZulu U/ 19 Coach Lindokuhle Mkhize laments lack of experience from his charges after they crashed out of the Metropolitan Cup at the last 16 stage.
“I am very proud of my boys. They showed character and were brave. It was not an easy task but the boys played well, although we did not reach the finals as we expected but as you know experience works in football our team is full of youngsters and they lack experience,” said Mkhize.
Mkhize believes that some of his players can be promoted to first team if they continue with the good work they have been putting in for the juniors.
“There are some positives from this tournament. It gave our players a chance to mix themselves with their peers from other parts of football circles and that we help them to develop in future,” Mkhize said.
The coach added that some of his players were on a plane for the very first time, which scared them and could have affected their play on the field.
Usuthu juniors started the tournament brightly as they beat Bellstar United 2-0. The Durban-based outfit went on to draw 0-0 with their fellow Premier Soccer League counterparts Bidvest Wits.
Mkhize’s boys were beaten 2-0 by Glendene Thwarted, with the loss resulting in Usuthu crashing out of the prestigious youth tournament.
Ajax Cape Town would eventually defend their title as they beat Mamelodi Sundowns by a solitary goal to nil. The Urban Warriors have now won the tournament six times and they hold a record of being the team who has won it in numerous occasions.
