BAFANA BAFANA IN BIG TROUBLE

A lacklustre performance from Bafana Bafana saw them lose to Cape Verde for the second time within the space of 5 days at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban last night.
South Africa went into the game needing a win after losing in Cape Verde last Friday, a defeat which saw them languish at the bottom of their World Cup qualifying group.
The first half of the game saw the South Africans control most of the possession and create a lot of chances. Tokelo Rantie should have given the home team the lead early on but snatched at his shot which went wide.
Bradley Grobler had a free header midway through the first half but his header went straight to Josimar Dias, the Cape Verde goalkeeper. Hlompho Kekana had the last notable chance in the first half but his free-kick from 25 yards out went just over the cross bar.
Early on in the second half, South Africa conceded a soft free-kick outside the box and Garry Rodrigues smashed it through South African goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands to give the away team the lead in the 52nd minute.
South Africa tried to get back in the game but the more players they pushed forward, the more gaps they left at the back. Fifteen minutes later, Rodrigues cut in off the left hand side and fired the ball into the top right corner of the net to give the visitors a 2-goal advantage.
South Africa tried to fight back in the last 20 minutes but all they could manage was an 89th minute consolation goal from Andile Jali.
Bafana Bafana Coach, Stuart Baxter, said that whatever he planned to do did not work out.
“Although the lads showed great heart, I don’t think the lack of taking our chances and the quickness of their counter attack worked out,” said Baxter.
Baxter was extremely gutted because Bafana Bafana started the international break on top of their world cup qualifying group and at the end of the break, they find themselves at the bottom relying on other results to take them to the World Cup.
“I’m massively disappointed, the players are massively disappointed and now we don’t have anything in our own hands which is disappointing,” explained Baxter.
Bafana Bafana’s next World Cup qualifier will be against Burkina Faso on the 7th of October.
