South Africa defeated Sudan 1-0 in Afcon qualifiers on Sunday afternoon at the Orlando Stadium, Soweto.
After an underwhelming performance from an away game in Ghana which they lost by 2 goals to nil, Bafana made four changes to the squad which lost to Ghana on Thursday night Erick Mathoho, Lebogang Phiri, Lebogang Mothiba and Thulani Serero all started. Bafana started the game with high gear, it took them a minute to create the first chance which was missed by South Africa’s talisman Lebogang Mothiba.
The match was lopsided, as South Africans were the ones creating more chances while Sudanese sat back and defended. Bafana continued their attacking game as Percy Tau’s low cross was missed by Lebogang Mothiba again, just one minute to the interval Bafana found the back of the net through Lebogang Phiri who blasted his left-footed shot into the top corner.
The second stanza was the same as the first one, Bafana searched for their second goal and almost found it when the substitute Kermit Erasmus’ shot was blocked by Sudanese keeper. The visitors did look for the equalizer in the latter stages but the South African defence was intact, as they held on to a 1-0 win. The win sees Bafana taking the third spot in Group C standings below Ghana on goal difference who are yet to face Sao Tome and Principe.
