The national women football team, Banyana Banyana, thrashed Mozambique 5-0 in a friendly match at Kwanyamazane Stadium on Sunday.
Brace from Silindile Ngubane, own goal by Ceila Uate, Nocawe Nikita and Amanda Dlamini’s goals sank the visitors.
The hosts were all over the visitors, though the game got off to a slow start. It came as no surprise when Ngubane broke a deadlock and scored to give her side a 1-0 lead on the 37th minute. After scoring, Banyana gained momentum and seemed to be more dangerous but the game went to half time with the home side having an upper hand.
Early on the second half, Coach Simphiwe Mkhonza’s girls picked up where they left off. The visitors were under pressure as they were panicking at the back and that saw Uate putting the ball on her own net to give Banyana a comfortable 2-0 lead.
The experienced Dlamini was untouchable in the middle of the pack and was a thorn to the Mozambican players. She was instrumental on the third goal as she made a great run down the right flank and passed to Ngubane who clinically netted it to add pain to the visitors.
Dlamini, who was named the queen of the match, came with a great pass which Nikita converted to make it 4-0. Dlamini sealed her outstanding performance by adding the fifth goal for the hosts.
After the march, Dlamini was happy with her performance but still wants to improve. “I felt my performance on the field was fine but I could have done better as there is always room for improvement,” she was quoted as saying on safa.com. “The coaches have once again put their confidence in me and it is very humbling that I got to play my own game.”
Coach Mkhoza was pleased with the performance his girls showed. “I am very happy with the performance today. The girls stuck to the game plan and even the new players were not overwhelmed by the international stage,” he said. “There are however a few things that we will need to work on before the match against Zimbabwe. Overall I am happy with what I saw.”
Meanwhile Banyana will lock horns with Zimbabwe in a friendly match at Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton on Saturday.
